|He's hard to see there on the iron supports of the lighthouse and he wants to be. This poor male Downy Woodpecker has just flown onto Manitou from the NE – apparently crossing about 80 miles of Lake Superior – and then been greeted by a Merlin which made about a half dozen dives on this fellow during his last couple hundred yards before arrival. Talk about survival of the fittest! I watched the event unfold just before 7AM on 7 October of 2003.
|A kettle of mostly immature Broadwings over Perch Lake at 11AM on 29 June 2003 . I estimated about 70 to 90 birds at the time. After blowing up the photo, printing and carefully counting – I had to revise the number – there are 148. The photo has been cropped somewhat for this web posting.
